I know it's a long shot but does anybody know if somebody out there is still doing 'Archdale' spare parts. I went out to repair a 6 foot 'Archdale' drill this morning and discovered the huge clock spring that keeps the spindle balanced was broken in half! Homer Simpson Doh Sound Download.

What a struggle to get the broken spring out of it's housing! I've told the customer to contact a local springmaker to see if they can make a new one ( luckily Rochdale is a centre for spring making in the U.K. ) but it would be nice to get an original if possible. Regards Tyrone. Tyrone 'Clock Spring' is the operative word. A UK clock spares 'on line' shop has Clock springs in a whole range of sizes from small to large, and some of the large ones are very powerful.

'Cousins' is the stockist's name. Hell of a lot cheaper than having one made if you can find one about the right size and thickness. The springs are listed giving width, thickness and size of the barrel that it would be fitted in.(All measurements in mm) The 'Trifix' brand of springs are very strong, and have a hole at each end. They come coiled to the quoted barrel diameter with a retaining wire round them. A spring's strength is directlly proportional to its width but proportional to the cube of its thickness. So get one twice as thick as original and it is EIGHT times as strong. ( 1x1x1=1 and 2x2x2=8) ( They call Width of spring 'height'.) Davycrocket (Horologist).

Hi Tyrone I looked in the Cousins list and sure enough there was one 1.5' (40mm) wide but only 0.5mm(0.020-ish')thick. Your spring being twice as thick will be 8 times stronger than the Cousins one. 0.5 cubed being 0.125 and 1 cubed being 1, ref my post above. And even though I have a special device to assist putting a 0.5mm spring into a barrel, it is quite a dangerous task even with thick leather scafold rigger's gloves.
